Five Things I Wish Someone Had Told Me About Fine Jewelry

1. Gram Weight Really Matters

We all hope to keep our jewelry forever, but if you ever decide to sell a piece or simply want to understand its true value, the gram weight and gemstone quality will determine whether it was a wise investment.

Gold prices have steadily risen over the years, but many brands still hide gram weights to justify inflated markups. It's common practice, especially with luxury labels - to prioritize glossy marketing over transparency. Some markups are fair (design, craftsmanship, operations all cost money), but others are just branding premiums with little substance.

Always ask: How many grams of gold am I getting? That one number can reveal whether you're paying mostly for gold or for hype. I've personally bought pieces that looked solid but ended up bending or breaking because they were hollow—and I wasn’t told the gram weight upfront.

At Mojo, we center gram weight transparency because we believe you deserve to make informed decisions. You’re not just buying beauty—you’re buying value.

2. Ring Size Matters More Than You Think

Sizing is one of the most overlooked details in buying rings, but it makes all the difference. If a ring is too loose, you risk losing it. Too tight? It becomes uncomfortable, and you’re far less likely to wear it.

Finger sizes can vary a lot, even on the same hand depending on time of day, temperature, or your salt intake. That’s why we always recommend knowing your exact size before purchasing, and why we offer free ring sizers, whether you buy from Mojo or not.

If you plan to wear the ring on multiple fingers or stack it, yes - sizing up slightly can be a smart move. It gives you flexibility without compromising comfort. But if it’s a special, statement piece meant for one finger only (like an engagement ring), it’s best to get it sized precisely.

3. Solid Gold Doesn’t Always Mean Solid Construction

This one surprised me the most. "Solid gold" refers to the material (meaning it's made of gold alloy through and through—not plated), but says nothing about the construction of the piece.

You can have a ring that’s technically “solid gold” but is hollow inside, a cost-cutting method many brands use to save on gold while still using the term "solid." These pieces are lighter, more fragile, and more prone to dents or breaks.

At Mojo, we don’t do hollow construction unless it’s absolutely necessary, like a super chunky earring that would be painful to wear if made fully solid. And when we do, we say so clearly. Honesty in materials matters.

4. Jewelry Jargon Sounds Nice, But Often Means Less Than It Implies

The fine jewelry world is full of feel-good words: handmade, ethically sourced, Kimberley Process, responsibly mined, hand-selected, artisan-crafted, and on and on. They sound beautiful. They imply care, ethics, skill, and quality. But the reality? These terms are often unregulated, vague, or purely for marketing.

Take handmade, for example. It can mean anything from one person sculpting a ring from scratch, to someone simply polishing a machine-made setting. Most jewelry involves some handwork, so calling something handmade doesn’t actually tell you much about the level of craftsmanship. And frankly, sometimes machines do a better job, especially when precision, symmetry, or structural integrity matters.

Craftsmanship isn't about hands vs. machines, it's about skill, intention, and how well a piece is designed to look good, feel good, and last.

5. Jewelry Is a Collection, So Choose Pieces You Love

Buying fine jewelry isn’t just about chasing trends, it’s about telling your own story. Every piece should be something you love, wear often, and feel truly connected to.

The fun of building a collection is in finding those pieces that speak to you, the ones that spark something, whether it’s a memory, a moment, or a feeling. It’s about the excitement of discovering something that feels just right, something you can imagine wearing for years to come. Each piece should have a role in your story, whether it’s a daily staple or a meaningful statement.

If you’re starting your collection, don’t rush it. Take your time. Ask yourself: Would I wear this often? Does it bring me joy every time I look at it? Can I see this being a part of my life 5, 10, or even 20 years from now?

Fine jewelry is personal. It’s intentional. It’s not about how much you own—it’s about how much each piece means.
